Are You Serving God With Your Thoughts?

Are you struggling to fully trust God with your future?

A major aspect of this is trusting him in your thought life so that you don’t entertain false imaginations about the future. What exactly do I mean by this?

If you haven’t fully given your heart and life to the Lord, it can and often will affect your thoughts.  A wandering heart doesn’t always stop at the red flags of bad thoughts or false imaginations. I know this because it is a big struggle in my life.  I am very prone to entertain thoughts that don’t glorify the Lord. Instead, these thoughts serve my sinful nature.

I have grown a lot over the past year or so.  Praise the Lord–I am much more conscious of wrong desires than I was a year ago. However, I still struggle daily with thoughts about my future and my plan/desires for my life.

It may be the same for you.  If so, I would charge you:

Are you serving God in your thought life?

You may have never heard it put this way, but this vocabulary has become very common in our home over the last couple years.

Your thought life has a huge amount of power. It’s your own private bubble of whatever you choose to let in. A secret city known only to you and God.

A very common lie of our generation is this: We can’t control our thoughts or our feelings.  They just are what they are.

This is just wrong.  It’s biblically wrong.  2 Corinthians 10:5 says, “5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”

We are warriors in Christ, decked out in the full armor of God.  We are given the power through Jesus to rise above the sinful thoughts that assail us daily!

So where are you right now?  Are you worshiping your idea of the future?  I can tell you from experience that this is a trap.  I’m fighting that battle now and I have fought it for years.

What we want to have and think about right now is very often not what God would have us giving ourselves to.  Whether that is a person, a college, a dream, a career—every thing in this world ought not have the power to possess our thoughts to the point of weakness and frailty in our ability to take every thought captive.

Suffice it to say, we have power!

We don’t have to be overrun by thoughts and desires deep inside of us that drain our contentment, joy and peace!  Our heavenly Father would have us set our minds on higher things. To think about glorifying Him and serving him where we are right now.

Phillipians 4:8-9 says “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.”

Therefore I charge you:  Join me in giving thought to our thoughts!

Glorifying the Lord in our thought life is a part of giving him our hearts.  The two must go hand in hand.

“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7)

Submit your life, your future, your hopes and your dreams to the Lord.  Put faith in him to guide you in the right paths and you will have power in the secret city of your heart and your mind!
