Don’t Forget, Sin Is Not What Defines You

Sin is a reality we hate to talk about.

Intimidating questions can be asked like, “What are your sins? What areas in your life do you usually sin in? Will this make you sin?”

We do sin … every day. There’s no avoiding temptation. Being honest about it will set you free in many ways, and you will no longer be alone in that fight you struggle with. But the sins never completely leave your mind. They linger, to deceive and distract.

We find ourselves beat up and bruised from the lies. God forgives us when we repent, but to what extent? What’s the final straw? You feel dirty, unwanted, and confused. Unsure about how to escape the trap, we find ourselves sinning again.

This cycle can fill our life and drag us down to dangerous levels. We find that sin seems to … define us. 

Guess what? That is the exact opposite of anything God will ever call us. We are His children! Created to learn, love, and teach. 

Finding our identity in Christ is very important in a young Christian’s walk.  He calls us many names, and they all give us purpose and truth. Here are a few for you.

“For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin.” – Romans 6:6

1. Made in His image.

We are created to mirror our Father. He is everything perfect, pure, righteous, and wise. Therefore, if we let sin define us, we are not being the true selves we were created to be. When we believe that the evil things we contemplate or think about in our life come from our true nature in Christ, we are giving into the lies. 

All that tempts you is from the enemy, and is trying to purge our purity in God.

God knows you. He created you to be just like Him. He understands what you’re going through, because He faced it all. Jesus was fully man when He came to this world. That means He was tempted just like any of us.

The difference between Him and us is that He never gave in to that temptation.

“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” – Genesis 1:27

2. Beloved.

To be beloved means to be dearly loved. It’s more than your typical love, as in, “Oh, I love Doritos SO much.” It means to be treasured by someone so much, that they would sacrifice themselves for you. Sound familiar?

God’s love binds us together. This love is the glue in our relationship with Him. We will never be able to love Him the way He loves us. No matter how bad we mess up, He always loves us. God’s love never ends, and nothing can separate us from it. Wouldn’t you want to love someone that thinks this much and more of you?!

The best part about this all … God’s love is greater than sin.

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” – Romans 8:38-39

3. Forgiven.

If we confess our sins, the Father is faithful and just to forgive us.  We are eternally forgiven by Him. His grace spreads over us forever. No matter how deep and dark the hole we have fallen into is, He will pull us out. If we are filthy and shaken, He will wash us whiter than snow.  

He redeems us through His blood. There is no need to clean ourselves up before we go to Him. He finds us in our deepest denial, and accepts us into His grace. 

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” – 1 John 1:9

God will be with us forever. He never leaves! He is always there to forgive us, because in Christ, He knows what temptation feels like. There always will be a connection between Him and us. You can always go there.   

This is what we are defined by, not sin. Sin is the veil that gets in our way every day in our Christian walk. Push through that veil, ignore the lies.

Never should we be so enveloped in our sin that it blinds us from the truth of our Father.
