Some days, the weight of what the future might holds seems crushing.
How will life turn out? Will seemingly broken pieces ever be put together again?
For weeks, the news has broadcasted live footage of babies suffering from chemical gas. Dying. This unthinkable atrocity is enough to make you shudder.
Conflicts are raging around the globe. Terrorist attacks. Shootings. Bombs. Cold brutality.
How do we respond to such horror?
The truth is we never have to shoulder the future. God is in sovereign control. No matter how chaotic or startling the events may get, we can be anchored in this realization.
These verses have steadied the rising fear that has threatened to trouble and grip my heart:
“And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginnings of sorrows. For they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake.” (Matthew 24:6-9 NKJV)
Even wars and rumors of wars shouldn’t shock us. Jesus tells us they will come.
While our hearts break to hear of such evil tidings, instead of letting it shake our peace of mind, we should let it strengthen our trust in God. This world diseased by the curse daily proves itself to be twisted, gnarled and ugly. (Rom. 8:22)
But, the glorious truth is that it is not our home. He has overcome it…
“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33 NKJV)
We can lean upon His promises.
We can come to cast our burdens and cares:
Praying for hurting families.
Praying for leaders.
We do not have to let our heart be troubled. (John 14:27 )
We can hope in Christ. We can rest. We can trust.
Thank you for this reminder, Katherine! Great article!
Hey Emma! I just wanted to let you know that there was an earlier mistake on the byline. This article was actually written by Moriah Simonowich. And it was a great reminder!
Oops. Thanks for letting me know. I’ll edit it. 🙂
I too, can relate to the anxiety our unstable and harsh world can sometimes cause. Thank you for encouraging us to hope in Jesus! 🙂
Tragedies happen all the time on the news. It can get rather depressing. Maybe it isn’t the best response, but I often just turn the tv off and try to ignore it all. Sometimes it is just all too much.
This article was helpful and has really made me think about the news differently. Thanks for spending the time to put this together for us.
Best.
