3 Reasons Why You Should Share Your Story

3

You have a story.

It is a story that is unique, and beautifully written by our Creator.

It is a story of challenges you’ve faced and lessons you have learned. But more importantly, it is the story of Redemption.

The best part of your story is when God entered your life and changed everything for the best.

Your story starts when Jesus calls you by name, and you accept His invitation to become His child. That is what our story is about.

As Christians, God calls us to share our story of redemption with those who have not heard the Good News.

Psalm 107:2 says, “Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story— those he redeemed from the hand of the foe.”

God has saved us from sin and death, and He commands us to tell others about it, so that they may be saved too.

One of my favorite things about my student ministry is that we are given the chance to practice and tell our peers about how God has been working in our lives. Those times happen a couple times every year, and we call these nights, “Say So Night.” Say So Nights are my favorite nights of the year, but they are also some of the scariest.

If you were to ask me what makes me uncomfortable, I would immediately tell you that I hate talking in front of people, especially in large groups. The reason I get anxious on Say So Nights is because I am doing just that, going up on stage, and talking to over a hundred high school students.

Even though I am not a huge fan of sharing my story, God has taught me so much from doing it. Here are three lessons I have learned from sharing my testimony.

1. It’s Going to be Uncomfortable

When you feel God prompting you to share your story, there is going to be at least one aspect of it that is going to scare you. It will take you out of your comfort zone.

But God doesn’t call us to be comfortable. He calls us to take risks. He calls us to take chances, so that He can work through us.

When you hear God telling you to share your testimony or what He has been doing in your life, do it.

Just jump and trust.

It is so worth it.

2. It’s About God

Whenever I have shared what God has been doing in my life, it is easy for me to begin thinking that my story is about me.

But it’s not.

I did nothing. I was useless. I was dead in my sin. Than God came and brought me back to life. Only He can do that.

Our stories are not about us, they are about God and what he has accomplished.

Let’s not forget to give Him the glory that He deserves.

3. Your Story Has an Impact

When I have felt God prompt me to share my testimony, I am bombarded with lies from Satan that what I have to share doesn’t matter, that no one is going to listen or care, that my story won’t influence anyone.

I have learned that nothing could be farther from the truth.

What you have to say does matter. Someone is going to listen and care. And your story can impact the people around you.

You don’t know what the people around you are going through. Your story could bring hope to someone who is hopeless, healing to someone who is hurting, and joy to the mourning.

You never know who is listening.

Sharing your testimony can be a scary and nerve-racking experience, but it is worth the risk when we do what God has called us to do.

So, my dear brothers and sisters, let us proclaim to the world what God has done, and what He is continuing to do in us.

  • This is definitely a hard area for me, as it takes a lot of humility and trust. Something I’ve done a couple times is write out my story, which has not only helped me see the big picture of what God is doing in my life and led me to praise Him, but when the opportunities do come to talk to people my introverted brain will be more prepared to share with them. Thank you so much for bringing up these points and being an example!

  • Amen! Thanks Kelsey! So many of us 1) think our story is boring or 2) are terrified that it’s too messy to share. Mine looks boring on the surface but it’s actually messy. 😛 Great reminder that we need to share what the Lord has done in our lives!

  • Wow, this is an amazing post Kesley! Thanks so much for that encouragement 🙂 I’ve shared my testimony several times and it was pretty difficult for me. So, reading this really encouraged me to keep sharing!

  • I’m right there with you, Ashley! Sharing my story is not my favorite either, but it’s impossible for me to ignore God’s voice in this situation. Thanks for reading!

  • Hey Kayley! I hear ya. I am definitely an introvert as well, so I get that it is scary. But God has been able to work through that and give me courage to do what He has called me to do. Thank you for reading!

  • This was is amazing wonderful post Kelsey! Thank you so much for writing it. I was really in need of the encouragement that it gave.

  • So I have been super busy this past week, but I am finally able to comment. THANK YOU for this. I read this the morning before going to a youth activity at our church. I ended having the chance to give my testimony, and I probably would not have done that were it not for this article. I don’t know if my story encouraged anyone, but it was also a learning experience for me, as I have major shyness issues. Fantastic article, Kelsey. Thanks so much.

  • Emma, wow, that is so cool! I’m so humbled that the article was able to encourage you. Great job stepping out in faith, even when it’s uncomfortable. Those are amazing moments. Keep stepping out in faith. Thank you so much for sharing and reading!

  • Hey Joyce! I am not. I actually didn’t start writing for the Rebelution until August of last year, so that was way before my time. 😊
